The ground
More than five hundred
of our people rest here.
Live Oak Cemetery lies behind the church, and it has received the church’s families since the founding generation. Mothers and deacons, teachers and farmers, veterans and children: the whole life of a community, resting in one place.
Among them is S.S. Mincey, the community leader who brought Ailey its Rosenwald school and gave his life in 1930 for the standing he refused to surrender. The ground holds founders, builders, and the people who loved them.
Time has been hard on parts of it. Stones have leaned and sunk, rows have gone unmarked, and names are at risk of being lost. The church formed a Cemetery Committee to answer for that, and the work is underway.
